Retranchement. De drieling van Retranchement. De grenspaal bij het wandelpad staat op de Oude Zeedijk dichtbij het voormalige fort Nassau. In de tijd dat er ter plaatse nog het Zwin stroomde was het onmogelijk de juiste positie van de rijksgrens aan te geven. Besloten werd om 200 meter van die plaats op Nederlands gebied en op dezelfde afstand op Belgisch gebied nog een paal te plaatsen. Na het indijken van de Willem-Leopoldpolder in 1873 werd de 'echte' grenspaal nr. 364 - de middelste der 3 palen - geplaatst. De andere twee zijn als 'stille wachters' op non-actief blijven staan. Een dergelijke situatie is uniek in Nederland. | Retranchement. |
